Member Profile: Hilliard Pouncy

Hillard Pouncy is an unusually well-traveled man. He was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, where his father, a former Army Tuskegee Airman, was studying for a career in chemistry. His father’s studies and job opportunities, as well as his own, took him to New York, Indiana, New Jersey, Massachusetts, England, California, the former Soviet Union, Ghana, and, finally, Pennsylvania in 1991. Along the way, in 1978, he met and married his wife, Carolyn. They settled in Wallingford and have one child.

Pouncy, member of the Rotary Club of Swarthmore, serves as the Assistant Governor of in the Southeastern PA area that supports the clubs in Ardmore, Broomall, Bryn Mawr, Glen Riddle, Havertown, Media, Newtown Square, Swarthmore, Upper Darby, and Lansdowne.

Pouncy’s education included Boston College, Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and MIT, where he received his doctorate in political science. He taught at Brandeis University, Swarthmore College and Princeton.  Today, Pouncy continues to do research on American poverty. He is currently writing a paper, Sources of Poverty in Family Formation.

In 2005, Pouncy joined the Swarthmore Rotary Club, where he served as club president. A major accomplishment, spearheading a Global Grant called Work Ready, addressed Chester’s underserved community. The project brought together eight clubs worldwide to provide funding and support.
