The Rotary Club of Philadelphia announced a scholarship fund to honor long-time Rotary member and friend, Joan Batory. The endowed scholarship in her name celebrates Joan's legacy as a pioneer in environmental advocacy. She was instrumental in establishing recycling programs in Southeastern Pennsylvania and served as a founding Commissioner of the Pine Barrens in New Jersey, helping conserve over 1.3 million acres of land.

The scholarship aims to empower future environmental leaders, ensuring that Joan's lifelong dedication to environmental protection and sustainability continues for generations. Initially, the annual disbursement is planned to be $4,000 to $5,000, supporting one or more deserving students.

The scholarship fund is administered by The Rotary Club of Philadelphia Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, and will support Drexel University students pursuing environmental studies. Contributions to this fund may be tax-deductible. Drexel's comprehensive Environmental Studies Program and central Philadelphia location make it an ideal partner, allowing students to connect with our Rotary Club.

Joseph Batory, Joan's husband of 57 years and past Superintendent of Upper Darby School District, will serve as Chairman of this initiative.

Rotary International, a global humanitarian organization with over 1.4 million members, is dedicated to creating positive, lasting change worldwide. Its seven key areas of focus include supporting the environment, reflecting Rotary's commitment to combating climate change, promoting sustainability, and protecting ecosystems.
